The story of Grey Lady Gifts and owners, Rachael and Blair Perkins:
Welcome to Grey Lady Gifts! Enjoy our Nantucket inspired gifts, even if you aren’t able to travel the 30 miles to our island. All our products capture the essence of Nantucket.
Rachael and Blair met in the summer of 1980 at Henry’s, a local sandwich shop on Nantucket Island. Blair grew up on the island, and Rachael moved here permanently from the Boston area a few years later.
A mutual love of boating, fishing, and the superb natural surroundings have been their common bonds through the years. They raised three beautiful children who share their parents love of Nantucket. Two are boat captain’s like their father. Blair and Rachael worked numerous jobs, but now own and operate the premiere EcoTour company Shearwater Excursions, named for the Shearwater birds seen flying close to the water offshore. Excursions include Whale or Seal Watching, Harbor Tours, Clamming, and Kids’ Fishing.
In the off season, Blair and Rachael are commercial scallopers and property managers. During the long winter months they are inspired to produce crafts from the natural beauty of the island. From this love of Nantucket, Grey Lady Gifts was born. For those of you who don’t know, “Grey Lady” is the affectionate nickname given to Nantucket in reference to the grey shingles on all the houses, and the blanket of fog often present in the early mornings and evenings. Grey Lady Gifts’ Products
Nantucket and Nautical Cookie Cutters
Grey Lady Gifts’ first product was developed years ago when the Perkins’ children were young. The family had a well loved collection of cookie cutters, but they had rusted, so Rachael and Blair decided to create a line of stainless steel cookie cutters with an ACK theme. It was a lot of fun rolling out lobsters, whales, and Nantucket Island shaped cookies and then selling them island-wide. We’ve seen our cookie cutters used as gift tags, place cards, and welcome gifts at weddings.
Sea Shell Night Lights
While scalloping or just walking the miles of beaches, one can’t help but notice the beauty of the scallop shell. The rays and colors are striking, and no two are the same. They are best admired when light shines through them and their beauty warmly glows. Grey Lady Gifts packages scallop shell night lights in cotton mesh bags to mimic how scallops look when harvested in nets. Used throughout the house, these lights make a great gift for the chef on your list. Nantucket Bay Scallops are cherished by cooks around the world. Scallop Shell Night Lights also make charming baby presents.
Nantucket themed wrapping paper
Grey Lady Gifts is proud to offer Nantucket’s first collection of gift wrap. Our initial list of ideas was over a page long. Blair and Rachael spent a fun winter creating our unique designs. To kick off the collection, they chose some of Nantucket’s most iconic images such as Sankaty Lighthouse and the Nantucket Lightship. Other gift wraps include Nantucket Signs and Whaling Ships. The vibrant, high quality paper is packaged in an oversize roll measuring 30” wide and 8’ long. More designs are in the works.
